About Middle Tennessee Natural Gas Print E-mail
The mission of Middle Tennessee Natural Gas Utility District is to improve the welfare of the communities it serves by providing quality natural gas service at competitive rates in a safe, environmentally clean and efficient manner.

The Middle Tennessee Utility District of Cannon, Cumberland, DeKalb, Putnam, Rhea, Rutherford, Smith, Warren, White and Wilson Counties, Tennessee (Middle Tennessee Natural Gas or MTNG) was created in July, 1955 as a municipal corporation pursuant to the Utility District Act of 1937, to provide natural gas service to residents, businesses and industries within its boundaries.

Over 55,000 customers are served by Middle Tennessee Natural Gas in 124 communities in all or portions of 21 counties. We have over 125 employees trained and ready to meet the natural gas needs of our customers.

The District's Mission Continues with New Leadership

Middle Tennessee Natural Gas Utility District has a new Chief Executive Officer, but the mission remains the same as Leslie B. Enoch, II retired on June 30, 2011. Named by the Board of Commissioners to be the Chief Executive Officer effective July 1, 2011, is James E. Hodges, former Vice President – Engineering.

During his almost twenty years at the District, Mr. Enoch championed the District’s commitment of service to the public. Excellent customer service was always a top priority, and significant growth was achieved under his leadership. During his tenure, the District’s miles of pipeline increased from 1,400 to 3,500; the counties served grew from 15 to 21; and the number of customers doubled, increasing from 27,800 to more than 55,000. The annual sales volume per year increased from 4 Bcf (billion cubic feet) to 7 Bcf. He also was responsible for the acquisition of the Monteagle and Gainesboro Gas Systems.

Mr. Hodges has been employed by Middle Tennessee Natural Gas Utility District since 1985 and has significant knowledge of the natural gas industry and District operations. He has been responsible for engineering design, gas supply, and pipeline capacity during his tenure at the District as well as industrial development. He has also been involved with the Natural Gas Industry on the local, state and national levels. Mr. Enoch stated “With Jim’s depth of knowledge and experience, and an outstanding and dedicated group of employees under his steadfast leadership, the transition will be seamless.”

This month, the District celebrates its 56th year of service to the public. The District’s mission when it was created was to meet the human needs and industrial growth requirements of this area of rural Tennessee. The District has been successful in achieving this mission by clearly focusing on improving the welfare of the communities it serves and providing quality natural gas service at competitive rates in a safe, environmentally clean and efficient manner. The District remains committed to managing its business with the highest standards of integrity and fairness; being an innovative leader in the natural gas industry; providing a well-trained and customer-oriented work force; and addressing the needs of its customers, employees and associates on a timely basis with professionalism and courtesy.

“We thank Les Enoch for his decades of leadership and service to the District as well as the natural gas industry,” said Mr. Hodges. “Our entire staff and I look forward to continuing the District’s legacy of service to the public. The future looks bright as natural gas prices remain stable and the District’s rates are at the lowest level in years. “
